DNA Testing: Ancestry vs. Paternity

Image
DNA testing for ancestry is very different than a paternity test. Ancestry is looking at family history. The top companies offering this testing combine innovative DNA research with a very large and robust online family history resource to predict ethnicity and help individuals find new family members and/or connections. The genetic data can include going all the way back many generations uncovering where you came from and also identify DNA matches with other individuals.  Results usually include data from 500 geographic regions and can identify possible relatives via DNA software matching those to others that have taken the test. Some ancestry services use a  records-based form of searching which searches historical records such as date of birth, date of death and also marriage certificates and some take a deeper look into your individual history to find out what percentage of your DNA comes from different populations around the world. Paternity testing is a very ...

DNA Testing for Weight Loss-Why is it so important?

Image
There are six genes FTO, TCF7L2, MTNR1B, PPARG, BDNF, ABCB11 along with their associated genetic variations (SNPs) that have all been shown to have statistically significant associations with a person’s ability to lose weight and keep it off according to several scientifically sound studies. These studies have shown that people who participated in a rigorous and long-term diet and exercise programs displayed significantly different weight loss responses based upon their genetic profile. Those people who carried the most uncomplimentary pairs of genes lost weight with a diet and exercise program but, on average, they lost “less” weight compared to other participants who did not carry these specific genotypes. Also, after completing the diet and exercise program, people with more of the uncomplimentary genes were, on average, also likely to regain some of the weight that they had lost. The gene FTO and its associated SNPs have been shown to have significant associations with a p...

Health Aging-Feed Your Body What it Needs.

How does what we eat effect our longevity and how well we live? This is a question that could take a lifetime to answer. Food allergies and intolerances play a huge role in our ability to age well. Food allergies are a consistent problem for over 3% of the overall population and make eating out more difficult than it needs to be. An allergy is a reaction the body uses to alert you that a foreign substance has entered and is not tolerated well.  The most common food items that cause allergies are wheat, gluten, peanuts, shellfish, and dairy. Statistics show that over 6 out of every 100 children have allergies that they will eventually outgrow by the time they reach being an adult. Symptoms of an allergies can present themselves as stomach pain, nausea, redness, rashes, itchiness and stuffy nose, A food intolerance is something altogether different. An intolerance is the body’s inability to digest a food item correctly. Food intolerances affect the digestive system and cau...

Food intolerance vs food allergy

Image
Understanding the difference between an intolerance and an allergy is a very hot topic right now. A food “intolerance” or “sensitivity” is when the body reacts in a negative way when exposed to certain food or environmental items. This should not be confused with an allergy, which are mainly hereditary and come on quickly with a more severe reaction. For example, if you experience congestion or have sinus problems at certain times of the year or have itchiness or digestive issues following the consumption of certain foods, then you may have an allergy. If you feel fuzzy headed and lethargic later in the day or have bloating, that could be an intolerance. You could be intolerant to a food item or something in the environment. So, the question is, do I get an allergy test, or do I get an intolerance test? The answer is, probably both if you really want to create change. What is intolerance? An intolerance is the body’s inability to digest an item properly, whether this is a food ...
